Do I need a prescription to get the whooping cough vaccine?

No, as he finds himself in the Quebec immunization protocol, it is not necessary to obtain a prescription from your treating professional to benefit from it.

During your second‑trimester pregnancy assessment appointment (Routine Visit 2), our nurses will take the time to provide you with information so that you can make a free and informed decision about vaccination.

This vaccine is available in several Prenato clinics.

Is the whooping cough vaccine safe during pregnancy?

Yes, the whooping cough vaccine is safe and is administered in several countries around the world. No significant side effects have been reported other than local reactions at the injection site. It is not associated with any risk of complications for the mother or the fetus during pregnancy.

In recent years, medical societies have recommended vaccination for pregnant people between 26 And the 28  weeks of gestation, and this, at each pregnancy.

Is whooping cough a serious illness?

To date, whooping cough has a high number of hospitalizations and intensive care admissions in babies under 3 months of age. In Canada, children under one year of age represent the highest average incidence rate and account for nearly 80% of all whooping cough hospitalizations.

Why should I get the whooping cough vaccine?

Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by bacteria. It is characterized by strong coughing fits and transmission occurs through contact with the secretions of an infected person. Although the majority of healthy adults who contract whooping cough generally experience few effects, young children are more vulnerable to developing complications associated with this infection.

By getting vaccinated during pregnancy, you are offering protection to your unborn baby. Your newborn will have the opportunity to be vaccinated against whooping cough, but only from 2 months of age. Vaccination during pregnancy therefore makes it possible to offer protection during the first months of life, from birth.

Vaccination against whooping cough during pregnancy prevents approximately 90% of hospitalizations and almost all deaths related to whooping cough in children under 3 months of age.
