What are the risk factors?

Certain risk factors may contribute to the development of varicose veins and varicosities.

These factors can be divided into two categories: genetic factors and lifestyle factors.

Genetic factors:

  • Family history: If members of your immediate family (parents, brothers, sisters) have a history of varicose veins, you may have a higher risk of developing varicose veins.

Lifestyle Factors:

  • Age: The risk of developing varicose veins increases with age. Venous valves can weaken over time, affecting blood flow.
  • Gender: Women tend to be more likely to develop varicose veins than men. Hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, oral contraceptives, and menopause may contribute to this.
  • Pregnancy: The increased pressure on the veins during pregnancy, due to the enlargement of the uterus, can increase the risk of varicose veins. Hormones related to pregnancy can also influence venous valve function.
  • Obesity or overweight: Excess weight can put additional pressure on leg veins, increasing the risk of varicose veins.
  • Sedentary lifestyle: A sedentary lifestyle can lead to poor blood flow, increasing the risk of varicose veins. Regular physical activity is beneficial for venous health.
  • Prolonged standing or sitting position: People who stand or sit for extended periods of time without significant movement can develop blood flow problems.
  • Smoking: Smoking can alter vascular health, contributing to venous problems.
  • Exposure to heat: Prolonged exposure to high temperatures, as in the case of frequent hot baths or saunas, can dilate blood vessels and increase the risk of varicose veins.

What if varicose veins are not treated?

Failure to treat varicose veins over time can lead to several complications and health risks.

Some of the risks associated with a long-term untreated varicose vein include:

  • Worsening of symptoms: Symptoms associated with varicose veins, such as pain, cramps, heaviness, and swelling in the legs, may worsen over time. Untreated varicose veins can lead to inflammation of surrounding tissue, which can increase discomfort and pain.
  • Skin changes: Untreated varicose veins can cause skin changes, such as itching, dark skin color (hyperpigmentation), and possibly skin ulcers.
  • Superficial venous thrombosis: Untreated varicose veins can increase the risk of developing superficial venous thrombosis, where blood clots form in the superficial venous network.
  • Hemorrhage: Varicose hemorrhage is a hemorrhage caused by rupture of an untreated varicose vein. Although relatively rare, hemorrhage due to varicose veins is potentially serious and requires immediate intervention.
  • Unsightly appearance: Untreated varicose veins can impact the appearance of the legs, causing dilated and bumpy veins visible on the skin's surface.
  • Impact on quality of life: The persistent symptoms and complications of untreated varicose veins can affect quality of life, limiting mobility and overall well-being.

It's important to note that everyone reacts differently to varicose veins, and risks vary based on a variety of factors such as genetics, age, gender, and lifestyle.

Varicose veins treatment

Venous disease is a chronic and progressive disease. Regular follow-up in phlebology is essential to assess the evolution of venous disorders, adjust treatments if necessary, and prevent possible complications.

Sclerotherapy under ultrasound guidance

$249

Visual sclerotherapy

$199

Venous disease is a chronic and progressive disease. Regular follow-up in phlebology is essential to assess the evolution of venous disorders, adjust treatments if necessary, and prevent possible complications.

What types of treatments are offered in phlebology?

Conservative measures:

  • Compression stockings: Wearing elastic stockings to reduce pressure in the veins and improve blood flow.
  • Leg elevation: Raise the legs to the level of the heart to promote venous return.
  • Visual sclerotherapy: Injection of a sclerosing solution into the varicose veins, causing them to close and gradually disappear.
  • Echo-guided sclerotherapy: Injection of a sclerosing agent (in the form of liquid or foam) directly into the varicose veins under the guidance of an ultrasound, allowing more precise targeting of the treatment.
  • Endovenous treatment: (Laser or Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation) Less invasive procedures using a probe inserted into the affected vein that releases heat and causes the vein to close.

Venous surgery (not available at Prenato):

  • Phlebectomy: Surgical removal of varicose veins using small incisions.
  • Saphenectomy: Surgical resection of the affected saphenous vein.

Complementary approaches:

  • Walk: Walk for at least 30 minutes at a time every day to activate leg muscles, which promotes blood flow through the veins.
  • Weight control: Maintain a healthy weight to reduce pressure on veins.
  • Avoid prolonged standing: Take regular breaks to reduce pressure on your legs.
  • Follow-up and prevention: Venous disease is a chronic and progressive disease. Regular follow-up in phlebology is essential to assess the evolution of venous disorders, adjust treatments if necessary, and prevent possible complications.

What are the pre-sclerotherapy recommendations?

  • Avoid putting cream or oil on your legs the day before and on the day of the appointment
  • Bring compression stockings with you to each appointment
  • If you are sensitive to treatment, you can try analgesia 1 to 2 hours before your scheduled appointment time (acetaminophen or ibuprofen if you have no medical contraindications)

Pelvic congestion syndrome

Pelvic congestion syndrome, also known as pelvic congestion or pelvic venous insufficiency, is a collection of symptoms that result from impaired venous blood flow in the pelvic region. It occurs when the veins in this area don't work properly, causing blood to build up in the pelvic veins that causes unpleasant symptoms.

What are the possible symptoms of pelvic congestion syndrome?

  • Pelvic pain: Persistent pain in the pelvic area is one of the most common symptoms. The pain can be described as dull, throbbing, or heavy. It is often associated with menstruation and/or ovulation.
  • Pain during and/or after sexual intercourse: Women with pelvic congestion syndrome may experience pain during and/or after sexual intercourse, and in some cases it may last up to several days.
  • Menstrual disorders: Pelvic congestion syndrome can contribute to heavy and painful menstrual bleeding.
  • Feeling of pelvic gravity: A feeling of heaviness or heaviness in the lower abdomen is frequently reported.
  • Lower back pain: The pain can sometimes radiate to the lower back.
  • Worsening when standing or at the end of the day: Usually the pain is more severe at the end of the day or after standing for a long time, and it is relieved by lying down.
  • Vulvar and/or perineal varices: Varicose veins may be visible in the vulvar or perineal region.
  • Varicose veins in the legs: Varicose veins in the legs may accompany pelvic congestion syndrome.

Who can be affected by pelvic congestion?

It is a venous disease that affects especially women of childbearing age who had, in general, at least one pregnancy. During pregnancy, the veins dilate, which can cause pelvic varices, which can cause very disturbing symptoms.

This is a condition that is unfortunately underdiagnosed at present, as the symptoms can be attributed to other gynecological or pelvic conditions.

It is estimated that this disease would affect up to 30% of women presenting with chronic pelvic pain in which no other obvious pathology is found.
