Do you have to drink water before an ultrasound?

Les ultrasound scans are common during pregnancy. They can be performed to check the viability of a fetus, the date of a pregnancy or to help with certain diagnoses in the first (nuchal translucency), second (morphology) and third trimester. They are also commonly used in women's gynecological health to diagnose cysts, myomas, uterine fibroids, explore the ovaries, the uterus or even identify the location of a lost IUD.

Why drink water before an ultrasound?

Regardless of the ultrasound performed, our team is often asked the question: Do we have to drink water before an ultrasound?

You should know that some pelvic ultrasounds are more easily done when the bladder is full. The reason is simple, when the bladder expands due to the liquid it contains, it squeezes the intestines, which can sometimes get in the way and hide things. Drinking water can therefore allow better visibility of important organs as part of an examination of female reproductive organs.

Preparing for an ultrasound during pregnancy

During an ultrasound in the first trimester of pregnancy (viability, date and nuchal translucency), due to the size of the uterus and fetus that are still small, it is recommended to drink at least 1 liter of water And of do not urinate 1 hour before the appointment in ultrasound. This is also the case for gynecological ultrasounds with a normal size uterus (without pregnancy).

When you visit us for a second or third trimester ultrasound instead, the uterus and baby (s) are usually large enough that the bladder is no longer of much importance in the quality of the ultrasound.

If you perform an endovaginal ultrasound (ultrasound performed through the vaginal canal), the size of the bladder will not affect the result and a full bladder may rather be unpleasant during the ultrasound. It is therefore not recommended to drink first.

However, if you do not know how the ultrasound will be done, it is best to arrive with a full bladder and go to the bathroom if necessary. Do you have to do an ultrasound? Contact our team!
