This ultrasound is usually performed in a setting where the patient wants to know more about her fertility, wants to preserve her oocytes or in patients who are monitored in a fertility clinic. It allows you to see how many follicles (small bags containing immature eggs) are present in the ovaries at the beginning of the cycle. This number gives you an idea of your ovarian reserve, i.e. how many eggs are still available. Follicular count ultrasound assesses the quantity, but also the quality of oocytes using an endovaginal probe to obtain more accurate images of the ovaries and follicles, as well as the morphology of the uterus.
On the uterine side, we will look for any particularities that may reduce the chances of conceiving naturally. A 3D acquisition is then carried out for this reason (search for uterine polyps, septation, invasive myoma, double cervix,...).
The evaluation of ovarian reserve helps to estimate the response to treatment to improve fertility. Generally, this reserve decreases with age, significantly beginning in the mid-thirties, and more rapidly during the forties. Age alone is not the only indicator, however, and it varies from woman to woman.
It is a simple exam, but very useful in choosing the right fertility treatment. The size of the ovaries will also be evaluated and whether or not there are cysts or fibroids, which could influence treatment, will be noted.
- Can be practiced : At the very beginning of the cycle, between days 2 and 5, (i.e. during your period). (Note: This ultrasound does not have to be repeated every cycle.)
- Use to : Better know the chances of ovulation and uterine particularities.
- Addressed to: Women who want to assess their fertility, in order to make the decision to preserve their oocytes or women who are starting a process in a fertility clinic.
Important : This ultrasound must be combined with certain blood samples to allow a complete evaluation of the ovarian reserve.
