During our last article, Prenato talked about the benefits of a physiological birth (vaginal delivery without an epidural), however the ways to prepare for this type of birth were not discussed. Of course, a natural birth requires some preparations in order to better manage pain during active labor.
So here are some suggestions to facilitate your physiological birth!
One of the tips we can give you is definitely to move during the active work phase. Moving, walking, sitting on a ball or even dancing for some would reduce work time, promote the baby's descent into the pelvis and even reduce pain. In fact, when a woman in labor stands vertically, gravity helps her pull the baby down and open her pelvis. So, movement can facilitate your physiological delivery.
Dare to talk about your birth aspirations to the person who will be there on the scheduled day, but also to the healthcare team who will be with you during the process. By sharing your beliefs, the people around you will be able to support you during times of pain and direct you to alternative pain relief methods. Positive support will help you stay on track even as the intensity of the contractions increases. These significant people will be able to help you by carrying out pressure points, massages, bringing you compresses, hot water bottles or simply by helping you while traveling.
Like movement, changes in position during labor and pushing will allow the baby to slide better into the pelvis. So you can sit, lie down, get on all hands and knees, squat or even stand. Vertical positions would allow for better fetal oxygenation and would make contractions more effective. Ask for an exercise ball and feel free to use your bed as a support for various positions.
Some maternity hospitals and birthing centers provide baths in order to do part of the work or even the birth of the child there. Hot or lukewarm water allows the mother to relax well during the contractions. In addition, the effect of heaviness on the body is less present there because of the weightlessness effect. Some women will also appreciate the contact of water through a simple shower. The reassuring and enveloping effect of water can help you better manage your pain.
Depending on the temperature, but also according to the needs of the woman in labor, the application of cold or hot compresses could help her relieve the pain of childbirth. They can be applied to the back, lower abdomen, kidneys or even in the neck. The cold will help the mother calm her heat and numb the pain, while the heat will help reduce chills and muscle aches. Hence the importance of positive support from the people who will be present at work. As you create your bubble, these people will make sure to provide you with the tools for your well-being.
Listening to your needs and your body is important. Some women will feel the need to be coaxed and massaged, while others will hate to be touched. Whether you feel the need to hang around the neck of your companion or if you need solitude and concentration, it is important to listen to your instincts. No two women and births are the same. A massage that feels good can become unbearable the next minute. Adapt it according to your desires. The application of pressure points will also help reduce some pain.
Several natural methods are available in preparation for childbirth, whether to prepare for pain management or to prepare the body for childbirth. A multitude of activities and services are available to you and it is up to you to find out if these options appeal to you and if their results are sufficient for you. Whether through physiotherapy, yoga, breathing exercises, hypnosis, sophrology, acupuncture, the method Bonapace, massages or meditation, the possibilities are numerous.
However, their reliability varies and there is little research concerning certain fields of activity. You have to learn to create your own bubble, whether by diffusing essential oils or by dimming the lights. The important thing is to adapt the methods to your beliefs and values while remaining safe for baby!
