The new year begins, the weeks pass and we slowly see your questions coming in: are the medical services received at Prenato deductible for tax credits? So we thought we'd tell you a bit about Prenato services and the medical expenses related to them.
Our specialty is prenatal screening, we obviously do not know all the gray areas, the subtleties and the different possible cases. However, based on experience, there are a few questions that can be demystified.
Are Prenato services eligible medical expenses?
Our prenatal screening, laboratory analysis, obstetric ultrasound, and routine services are all considered medical services that may qualify for a tax credit. They can be declared in full or in part depending on what has already been reimbursed by your private insurer.
How to claim your tax screening fees
During your visit, the first thing to do is file a claim with your private insurer (or that of your spouse) if you have one, since our services are private and most of them are not covered by the RAMQ. Using your bill and your prescriptions, you can therefore apply directly to your insurance company. If everything is refunded, great! If only part of it is, keep the amount of the difference that you can report when you file your taxes. If nothing is covered by your insurer, keep your papers (prescription and bill) as you can benefit from them as a tax credit for medical expenses when the time comes to do your taxes.
Do you have more questions? We are definitely not tax experts! Talk directly to your accountant or consult the Government of Quebec or of the government of Canada which offer a lot of information online, relating to pharmaceutical expenses and tax-deductible medical services.
Happy tax season!
