From the very first months of life, your baby's eyes are especially vulnerable to UV rays. Their lens is still immature and cannot filter ultraviolet light effectively, unlike an adult's. Too much exposure can lead to short-term problems (keratitis) and long-term ones (cataracts, macular degeneration).
In theory yes, but before 6 months they aren't essential unless your baby is particularly sensitive. The main challenge is convincing your baby to keep them on! To help them get used to it, start with short sessions indoors, and lead by example by wearing your own sunglasses.
At this time, Health Canada has no set standard for eye protection recommendations in infants.
Look for sunglasses labelled UV 400 or 100% UV, with lightweight, shatterproof polycarbonate lenses and a flexible frame. An elastic band to hold them in place can also prove very handy! Lens colour matters relatively little: brown, grey or green all work well and reduce glare.
Avoid low-end models labelled with vague wording such as UV protection or UV 100, which have no real filter and can actually worsen UV exposure by dilating the pupil.
