Are your symptoms signs of perimenopause?

What the test measures

The test uses the 11 symptoms of the Menopause Rating Scale. You rate each one from 0 to 4 based on how intense it has been in recent weeks, for a total out of 44. Here is what you will be asked, and where to read more.

How to read your score

The Menopause Rating Scale sorts results into four levels: no or few symptoms, mild, moderate and severe. At the end of the test you see your total out of 44 and the level that matches it.

A number is not a diagnosis. Two women with the same score can be living very different lives: a moderate score driven entirely by sleep is not treated the same way as a moderate score spread across eight symptoms. What matters in a consultation is the overall picture and the real effect on your daily life.

The score does two useful things. It gives you precise words for what you are experiencing, which changes the quality of a consultation. And it gives you a measurable starting point, so you can compare in three months and know whether what you put in place is working.

What the Menopause Rating Scale is

The Menopause Rating Scale, or MRS, is a self-assessment scale developed in the 1990s and validated in many countries. It is used in clinical research to measure the intensity of menopause symptoms and to track how they change over time.

This is not a magazine quiz. It is the same tool used in published studies, which means your result actually means something to a clinician. It does not diagnose and it does not measure your hormones: it measures your symptoms, as you experience them.

If you would rather fill it out on paper before your appointment, our article on the rating scale explains how.

Frequently asked questions

Does this test replace a medical diagnosis?

No. It is a self-assessment tool. It helps you name your symptoms and prepare for your consultation, but only a health professional can assess your situation and discuss the options with you.

At what age does perimenopause begin?

It often begins between 40 and 45, sometimes earlier, and can last several years before your final period. That is why so many women live with symptoms long before they think about the word menopause. Read about perimenopause

Do I need blood work to know if I am in perimenopause?

Not necessarily. In perimenopause, hormones fluctuate from one week to the next, so normal blood work rules nothing out. It is the overall symptom picture that guides the assessment. Read about blood work

Are there options without hormones?

Yes. Your plan is built with you, based on your symptoms, your medical history and your preferences. Read about non-hormonal options

What happens after the test?

You get your score. If you want to go further, an initial consultation with the Méno by Prenato+ team is $150, plus a $30 file opening fee and applicable taxes. In clinic in Montreal, Brossard, Blainville, Vaudreuil, Quebec City and Saguenay, or remotely. Our services are private and not covered by RAMQ, and a receipt is provided for your insurance.
