Perimenopause: your guide to taking action

Over the past few articles, we've explored the many facets of perimenopause together: the weight gain that can show up for no clear reason, the brain fog, the irritability, the restless nights, the shifting libido and the aches and pains that sometimes appear out of nowhere.

That picture may sound worrying, but the goal of this series isn't to alarm you - it's to inform you and give you tools. Putting words to what you're going through is already taking back some power. These changes are neither inevitable nor "all in your head".

You now have a better understanding of the "why".
It's time to move on to the "how": here's a concrete action plan to help you protect your balance, your energy and your well-being, and turn this transition into a positive step for your overall health.

Step 1: Shift your perspective - this isn't "just age"

The first step, and probably the most important one, is to refuse the it-is-what-it-is narrative. No, you don't have to "put up with it" or "just deal with it".

Perimenopause is a natural life stage, and one that is better understood today. We now know that the hormonal fluctuations that come with it can affect many aspects of physical and emotional health - and that effective strategies exist to help you live it better.

Understanding what's happening in your body helps you make sense of your symptoms and move from being a spectator to being an active player in your own well-being.

Step 2: Build your foundations - the non-hormonal actions

Even before looking at hormonal solutions, you can act on three essential pillars that directly influence your quality of life and the intensity of your symptoms. These are the foundations everything else rests on.

  •  Nutrition: reducing inflammation and supporting your metabolism
  • Your mission: tackle insulin resistance.
    • How: cut back on refined sugars and ultra-processed foods, and load up on colourful vegetables. Include a source of protein at every meal and don't be afraid of healthy fats - avocado, nuts, olive oil, fish.
  • Smart movement: protecting your muscles and your brain
  • Your mission: support your muscle mass and boost your mental energy.
    • How: fit in 2 to 3 strength training sessions a week - essential for keeping your metabolism active. Round it out with a cardiovascular activity you enjoy (brisk walking, dancing, cycling, swimming) to support your heart and your overall well-being.
  • Stress and sleep: calming the nervous system
  • Your mission: settle your nervous system and regulate your cortisol.
    • How: make sleep a priority. Set up a soothing bedtime ritual and practise a few minutes of deep breathing or heart coherence breathing every day. These simple habits can transform your mood, your anxiety and your sleep quality.

Step 3: Have the conversation with a professional

Lifestyle changes are powerful, but they can't always make up for a significant hormonal deficit. That's where medical support becomes essential.

Prepare for your appointment so you get the most out of it

  • Take stock of your symptoms: reread the themes covered in this series and write down everything that resonates, even the things that seem minor.
  • Assess their impact: spell out how these symptoms affect your daily life - your energy, your sleep, your mood, your relationship or your work.
  • Ask the right questions: "I'm experiencing these symptoms; could they be related to perimenopause?", "What are my treatment options?", "Am I a good candidate for hormone therapy? What would the benefits and risks be in my case?"

Be well informed:

Knowing that effective, recognized options exist will help you go into the discussion with confidence. Hormone therapy, when it is personalized and properly monitored, is a safe and effective solution for the great majority of women.

The goal: a plan that fits you

For some women, lifestyle adjustments will be enough. For others, a local estrogen treatment will relieve the symptoms. And for many, a tailored systemic hormone therapy will make a real difference to their quality of life.

Perimenopause isn't an ending. It's a transition. And like any transition, it's a chance to take stock, to take care of yourself and to build the foundations of solid health for the decades ahead.
